The Project<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

The Source Water Project was born from the commitment of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) to enhance and protect springs and water resources, fundamental for mountain territories, natural ecosystems and the communities that inhabit them. This project reflects the awareness of the importance of preserving these resources, not only as environmental heritage, but also as an essential element for sustainability and quality of life in mountain areas.<\/p>\n

Objectives of the Source Water Project:<\/p>\n

Monitor water sources throughout the national territory by collecting data useful for protection and study.
\nContribute to awareness and knowledge of water sources and water resources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A participatory science project<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

The Source Water Project is a Citizen Science initiative, an innovative approach to scientific research that directly involves people in the area. In Citizen science projects, data is collected from all people interested in studying and investigating the topics the project deals with and therefore contributing with the data collected in the area.
\nParticipating means observing, measuring and recording information on water sources, contributing in a concrete way to common knowledge and the protection of our water resources. Participatory Science not only makes science more accessible, but allows each of us to become protagonists in protecting the environment.
\nThe data collected in the Participatory Science project are accessible to all. Anyone can consult them and know exactly how they were obtained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Who can participate in the project<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Anyone can participate in the project. If you do activities in a natural environment, such as hiking, cycling, mountaineering, etc., you can participate in the collection of data from the sources you find in the area. You can also organize activities aimed at collecting data from sources to explore and learn about the area from a new point of view.

All updated data on the sources can be viewed on the interactive map<\/a> and in the application.
\nWe currently have around 600 validated source monitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Dissemination<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

As a Participatory Science project, the first communication objective is the return of the data collected and the communication of all updates to the people who participate and who, by collecting data, are primarily the authors of the project and its results.
\nProject progress is communicated via a newsletter<\/a>. Continuously updated scientific reports<\/a> are also available which summarize and describe the activities and analyzes carried out.<\/p>\n

In line with the second objective, the Acqua Sorgente project is committed to promoting knowledge and perception of springs and water resources.
\nFor this reason the project participates in information events open to communities.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Project collaborates with educational institutions to present and discuss knowledge related to water resources and to carry out practical activities related to spring monitoring. Almost 200 male and female students were involved in PCTO courses related to water and the Acqua Sorgente project in the high schools and technical institutes of Biella, Pisa and Acireale.<\/p>\n

Being a Participatory Science project, sharing the results with the scientific community is a primary aspect of the project. In 2024, the results have already been presented in national conferences and new participations in international conferences are planned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Collaborations<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

The Acqua Sorgente Project<\/strong> is already leaving its mark in the scientific community, thanks to agreements with research bodies and the interest aroused during scientific conferences. The project benefits from the support of important institutional partners, such as land management bodies, research centers and universities, who collaborate above all for the scientific analysis of the data collected.
\nAlready in the first year, agreements were initiated with the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa, the Department of Sciences of the University of Rome 3 and the Management Body of the Alpi Marittime Protected Areas. These collaborations will allow us to deepen the study of hydrogeology on a regional and national scale, expanding knowledge of water resources.
\nIn 2025, the results of the project will be shared with the scientific community through national and international conferences and publications in specialized journals, to enhance the work done and promote new discoveries!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
